On our first tour in 1992 we brought along an Au Pair from Switzerland, Marco Vellani, as a tutor for the youngest member of our troupe, Matt Rector. Because Letters From the Front defines our American culture so distinctly, and because Marco wanted to learn about all things American, he became fascinated with the play -- especially the music. He could often be heard whistling Stars and Stripes Forever, which is featured in a comic routine early in the play. About midway through the tour we were at a base where a military band was marching across the parade ground rehearsing for a big event. Suddenly the band struck up Stars and Stripes Forever. Marco was duly impressed. "How about that! They're playing the song from your play!" |
