Bob
Harter
starring as
Johnny Chastain
(1992, 1994 & 1996 National Tours)
Bob Harter was the second actor to play Johnny Chastain in Letters from the Front, bringing the rapscallion, but lovable, character to life for 91 performances, starting with the Ft. Bliss test market and continuing through three national tours (1992, 1994, 1996). His Johnny was witty, wickedly charming, and the definition of cool. One could easily see why even the flinty Katharine Hartgrove would fall for this rakish rogue.
Raised in Knoxville, Tenn., Bob took his thespian ambitions to Los Angeles where he landed lead roles in productions such as Barefoot in the Park and Harvey. He has done stints on a number of popular TV shows including Three's Company, I'll fly away, and Savannah. He is well known for his side splitting stand-up comedy routines and is in constant demand for TV commercials and as a spokesman.
Like his costar Della Cole, Bob enjoyed meeting and mingling with those serving in America's Armed Forces. "They're the glue that holds this whole wonderful, multicolored mosaic we call America together," he says. "They're always there serving us and its been a privilege to serve them."
And serve he did. When Bob stepped on stage, his was the suave, wise-cracking persona that every young man in the audience wanted to emulate. Part of this was the result of Bob's natural charm, but the real secret was a gift for comic timing; a knack for knowing how to deliver a line so that every drop of laughter was wrung from it.
Bob didn't save his humor for the stage alone. He felt it his mission in life to keep all those around him laughing, often making himself the butt of his own jokes. His ability to mimic popular personalities kept the cast and crew in stitches during those long hauls from one base to another.
Most of all Bob enjoyed working with his costar Della Cole. As a matter of fact, the two have made their act permanent, taking their vows in May of '99. Bob and Della make their home in a suburb of Atlanta with her son, Mike, and their Jack Russell terrier, Wally.
To those
of us who've had the privilege of knowing and working with Bob Harter, he will always be
remembered as an Actor and a Gentleman.
