Since 1992, when we first started touring Letters From the Front to military audiences, we have had an outpouring of appreciation for providing a glimpse into the lives of those who served before them, going back as far as the Revolutionary War. We are happy to report that in our wake we have left a renewed interest in letter writing; the time honored means of expressing one's joys, fears, affection, and loneliness to a loved one. Getting a letter can brighten your day immeasurably -- especially if you are serving in a distant land. That's what countless service men and women told us on our two previous overseas tours, and that's what inspired Producer Marsha Roberts to launch the Letters TO the Front letter writing campaign. Letter collection boxes, along with entry forms, were placed in every commissary in the world. General Mills, who has sponsored our show since 1996 (no, we don't receive a penny from DeCA, the DoD, or any other government agency), funded the printing and advertising costs. All other work was done on a volunteer basis, including the collection and judging of many of the letters by The Retired Officers Assoc. Overseas, a number of MWR squadrons distributed the letters to service men and women in their districts. The result of the contest: Thousands of letters from the HOME front to brighten the holiday season for those serving abroad. |
